Recent Comments

As a continuation of the last post, I have modified the front page of this blog slightly. You'll notice the right information column now includes a summary of recent comments. Below that summary is a link to a page listing the 20 most recent comments in their entirety. I hope this helps. One question I have is whether the brief summary of the 5 most recent comments appearing on the right is really useful or is it too brief? Should I leave them, or just have the link to the full page of recent comments? Discuss.

In regards to the federal prison at Boron...I stumbled on your blog looking for some High Desert history. I know a little history concerning the now ghost town prison. My Father worked up there as a supervisor years ago, and yes it is odd that this golf ball on top of a hill was a federal prison.

Originally, the site was a radar observation point. It was established in the late 40's. I'm sure Edwards AFB had some big part in it. There were others scattered across the desert. That is the reason for the golf ball. It was never used by the prison.

After it was abandoned by the military, the federal land became a low security prison. Most of the time it held white collar criminals. The houses you stumbled upon were where most of the personnel housing, which were free to the occupants for their remote assignment. We never lived there, but lived closer to the Air Force Base. It was one of those 5 star prisons, I think there were even tv's in the cells, prisoners were free to roam about the compound. Like I said it was low security, and prisoners could easily escape if they wanted to. The 16 years I lived in the area I don't recall an incident.

Well due to whatever reasons the prison closed it's doors. If you ever want to do more exploring, check out the area north of the hill. There is a building that was the old firehouse when it was a military installation. The federal prison never took care of it's upkeep.

hope this clears up the mystery...
