Adult Swim is ruining me.

The new season of Adult Swim started a couple weeks ago. The new season includes new episodes of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and Sealab. I think there will be new Home Movies and The Brak Show coming in a couple weeks. So far, all the shows have been great. But what REALLY surprised us this season, was the adult swim informational ads between shows. In the first season, they had video footage of old people swimming. The second season had images of modified airplane safety cards. These were both unique, but did not compare to this season. In this newest season, we are treated with black screens with white text on them. In the background, interesting music plays (having no correlation to what is written on the b&w cards). The text is apparently just the writers talking to us. Its very non-formal, and somewhat silly at times. You'd have to see it to understand. For those of you that don't know. The main adult swim block is on Sundays from 11pm-1am. Mon-Fri is a shorter adult swim during the same time (on Cartoon Network).

The problem is, after watching Adult Swim, most other television shows and ALL other commercials seem trite and contrived (which of course they are). I've always held commercials in contempt, but now it is far worse. They really appear like plastic caricatures of themselves. Its come to the point that I can't even believe people are creating these commercials, others are approving them as good, and some study somewhere is showing that they are affective. How many 1800-CALLATT commercials with Carrot Top did they make? Who hired the Dell kid in the first place? Who writes this music that everyone is supposed to relate to for those Verizon commercials? I can't remember if I mentioned before about this ATT Wireless commercial that had music by The Ramones in the background. You know, The Ramones, the original anti-establishment punk band. Thank God Joey Ramone isn't alive to see his music backing AT&T. You can't get more establishment than that.

Then there's Adult Swim commercials. Cool music, and someone just talking to you through text. Being honest about they they know and do not know. They are honest about what commercials are for and how they work. They are representing exactly what I think commercials should be. Honest. Just tell it like it is, let us decide!

It should be noted that Joey Ramone, towards the end of his life, took a liking to the stock market. The last song I heard from him was called "Maria Bartoromo", named after the (no so famous) eponymous CNBC anchorwoman. So maybe he wouldn't have minded the commercial after all... even if we all do! ;-)

Posted by: David Pisoni at June 25, 2003 03:45 PM

I've never watched Adult Swim. I'll have to check it out. Some of the stuff I don't find that great. But, I do like the anime. ReplayTV is so nice, the commercial advance is great! Too bad they're removing it. The feature works really well too.

Posted by: at June 27, 2003 11:21 AM

But you wouldn't want to skip the commercials during Adult Swim. The commercials are half of what makes it so great. They're just talking to you. Very funny.

Posted by: Wonko at June 27, 2003 11:43 AM

heyo, fer sure. adult swim is on the cusp of smart, yet humble programming. It's fun, chill, and it isn't self-promoting to the point of self-righteousness. In short, it kicks the shit outta mtv.
-hey, does anyone know where a body can get playlists of the music they have during the commercials?

Posted by: laz at August 6, 2003 01:15 AM

Wow, playlists of the music would rock. I have no idea. It took a fluke for me to find the original Adult Swim Theme song. I was at a friends house when it came on. I jumped up yelling, "WHO IS THIS!!!". Turns out, it was Tito Puente. Awesome album.

Posted by: Wonko at August 6, 2003 10:02 AM

If you stay up until the end of Adult Swim they will list all the music they used that day, of course if you really really want to find out what a piece of music is you'll have to stay up until early morning.

Posted by: Sir Mildred Pierce at August 14, 2003 11:10 AM

Does anyone know how I can find out the remixed verison of tito puente's mambo gallego the one they used on adult swim. They also use it on hotjobs.com, and an ad on comedy central.

Thanks

I have to add that the commmercials this season are something else. I was recently asked by my bass instructor if i'd ever heard of jaco pastorius and I relplied "yes". He couldn't believe I had learned of such a brilliant yet relatively unknown musician from the cartoon network!!

Posted by: cmartny56 at September 24, 2003 07:36 AM

Hey Wonko. I'm glad that you found the original Adult Swim Theme song. I, myself, have been looking for it, but all in vain. I think it would help if you could tell me the title. Thanks.

There are two parts to the Inuyasha opening cards on [adult swim]. The first part is where a it says 'next: inuyasha', and the music during this segment is an instrumental version of a song called 'Alice' by Algorithm. You can download a sample or buy the album at algocentral.com. The second part comes directly afterward and has the individual letters in I N U Y A S H A turning into visibility while a they play an unreal beat with slow guitar wails in it. According to the boards at adultswim.com, this is a non-commercial track done by an Atlanta producer named Chris Devoe. Like many of you, I want this song badly, but can't find a spot do download it or buy an album. If any of you are ahead of me, and know where to get it, please e-mail me at pinkfinger9@hotmail.com. Gracias.

Posted by: Josh at September 28, 2004 12:57 PM

The best bet to find out the names of these songs is to trudge through the glut of music threads on the adultswim forums. You'll probably end up disappointed, though. Some of what gets played during the commercial bumpers (such as a lot of the nice jazzy stuff and the infamous Enzyte whistling tune) comes from the Turner libraries and is only available for on-air promotional use (not accessible by the general public). The only hope at this point is to get a job there and start making and sneaking out copies.

It also sucks that the instrumental version of Dudley Perkins' A Lil' Light album is only available on vinyl (the adult swim folks got a copy on CD as a promo... grrrrrr lucky bastards). I don't much care for Dudley's voice or lyrics but I love Madlib's music.

Black Mind: I can't remember which particular track that one is, but it's either from Yesterday's New Quintet, Five Deez, or Psyche Origami.

Speaking of which... "Angles Without Edges" by Yesterday's New Quintet is an absolutely awesome album... sort of a cross between jazz and instrumental hip-hop; it's difficult to describe, but it's excellent stuff. I think it's used for about half the eyecatches on Adult Swim.

Hey Dave Sound Recorder (which comes with the PC) also works to record extreme tracks. But I use creative player (it came with my mp3 player) to record the extreme tracks but whatever works its fine. And finally a bump site is open that is dedicated to bump music. go to www.bumpworthy.com today. You can downloads any bump in MP3 formatt or the video in AVI formatt. You may need to download DivX to play AVI in Windows Media Player or for you Mac users just use the DivX player its self Quick Time doesnt play AVI

A new commercial for ATHF with the Mooninites singing a fast paced almost like a rap song. It just aired recently and I want to know if anyone knows that song that they are singing?? Going crazy trying to find it.

Posted by: Hutner at April 19, 2005 06:12 PM

names jahseed.. and when i first started wacthing A/S the beats that they play have a strange effect on my ears ; and i judge my tracks by what i hear on there instead of typical main streem "rap beats.
How do you submit a track'"r" 2 if thats possible?
see what the swimmers thank.

Posted by: jahseed at May 3, 2005 09:00 PM

"The Ramones, the original anti-establishment punk band" I thought they were the first punk band signed to a major label. Not that they're bad. "The Doors" are the only major band that I know of (I'm sure there are more) who does not and will not ever allow their songs to be used in advertising to the point of taking legal action.
